S.H.E.D. is built on a simple idea: most people want to do the right thing. We make sharing easier by making responsibilities clear, documenting handoffs, and building practical safeguards into the experience.

S.H.E.D.
- Operating the marketplace and providing the technology reasonably as designed
- User accounts, listings, search, booking, payment integration
- Messaging, notifications, inspection records, pickup/return workflows
- Transaction records, safety disclosures, reporting tools
- Dispute-management tools, platform security, and access controls
S.H.E.D. does not own, maintain, inspect, or guarantee every piece of equipment listed by users unless S.H.E.D. actually performs that function.
Equipment Owner
- Having the right to list the equipment
- Accurate listing descriptions and condition
- Disclosing known material defects or problems
- Identifying required accessories
- Providing applicable manufacturer safety information where available
- Not knowingly listing unsafe or prohibited equipment
- Reasonably maintaining equipment for its intended use
- Complying with applicable laws and platform requirements
An owner may not represent equipment as safe or functional if they have identified a known issue that has not been properly disclosed.
Renter
- Determining whether they are capable and comfortable performing their intended project
- Determining whether they understand how to safely use equipment
- Following applicable instructions and safety requirements
- Using equipment only for appropriate purposes
- Not allowing unauthorized individuals to use rented equipment
- Returning equipment according to the rental agreement
- Reporting damage, malfunction, unsafe conditions, or incidents promptly
- Understanding that S.H.E.D. does not determine whether a renter is personally qualified
S.H.E.D. does not determine whether a renter is personally qualified to perform a particular DIY project.
Operators
- When equipment requires specialized or dangerous operation, the appropriate owner or qualified operator is responsible for operating the equipment
- The operator accompanies the equipment and performs the operation
- The renter should not independently operate equipment classified as Operator Required
Operator-required equipment is booked through a service-based flow, not self-service rental.
Equipment Classification
Standard — Self Use
Renter may operate the equipment subject to the rental terms.
Enhanced Caution
Equipment may require additional experience, instructions, acknowledgment, or safeguards.
Operator Required
The renter may not independently operate the equipment. The owner or a qualified operator must accompany the equipment and perform the operation.
Prohibited
This equipment may not be listed or rented on S.H.E.D.
Clear About What S.H.E.D. Is — and Isn't
We believe in being upfront so everyone knows where they stand:
- S.H.E.D. provides the marketplace and the tools — not a guarantee of any specific equipment or project outcome.
- S.H.E.D. doesn't determine whether a renter is personally qualified to perform a particular DIY project — that's the renter's decision.
- S.H.E.D. doesn't own, maintain, or inspect every piece of equipment listed by users — owners do that.
- S.H.E.D. doesn't assume responsibility for all equipment or all user conduct — responsibility stays with the party that controls the relevant activity.
- S.H.E.D. is not an emergency service.
This responsibility model complements — but does not replace — S.H.E.D.'s attorney-reviewed legal documents. Final legal language must be reviewed and approved by a qualified attorney before S.H.E.D. begins accepting real-world transactions.
